I'm really excited to be on your show. As for me, I'm a small town guy from the south of India. I've been in the United States for the last 22 years.<\/p><p class=\"transcript__paragraph\">I live in Seattle now, and I'm very fortunate to have an amazing family of my wife and two wonderful boys. And I consider myself extremely incredibly lucky. to be in the technology business and surrounded by some amazing, amazing people.<\/p><p class=\"transcript__paragraph\">As for personal strengths, I believe learning is a key strength of mine. And I'm also someone who likes to look at the bright side of things when adversity hits.<\/p><p class=\"transcript__paragraph\">Things that have helped me in my life and career, I'm somebody who embraces a little bit of balance and reflection.<\/p><p class=\"transcript__paragraph\">What that means for me is, you know, be passionately involved in things, but, you know, knowing when to kind of step back and recharge and allowing others to take on things and shine and put in their creativity into things when you work in teams.<\/p><p class=\"transcript__paragraph\">So I've found that to be quite incredible personally for me and for the teams around me. I wasn't planning on it. I graduated in the mid 90s. at that point, mean, you know, graduated in India.<\/p><p class=\"transcript__paragraph\">And at that point, you know, pretty much everything around IT because we had the Y2K problem going on. I wasn't too keen on a job like that. So I first tried a job in sales and I didn't like it.<\/p><p class=\"transcript__paragraph\">And a friend of mine said, you know what, you don't have to really struggle this much. Why don't you just try some coding classes, take some courses, learn something and you can pick up a job.<\/p><p class=\"transcript__paragraph\">And I finally gave in because all through my school and engineering, know, whenever there was programming, I would do it, but I was not really, you know, attracted to it. Yeah, I didn't think of it as a career choice for me at that time.<\/p><p class=\"transcript__paragraph\">But when this opportunity, you know, when I transitioned out of that first job, I just lasted only two months in that sales job. And I said, okay, I'm gonna pick up a programming course. And while I was doing it, there was this company called UST, an American company.<\/p><p class=\"transcript__paragraph\">As I said, I'm from a small town in South of India and they're coming there and setting up shop. And I'm like, okay, this is great. I wanna try my chances. I didn't think much was going to come out of it. You know, we just had general conversations.<\/p><p class=\"transcript__paragraph\">I'm pretty sure even today, I think if you had asked something about any of the programming basics, I probably wouldn't be here talking to you, representing USD, that's for sure. But luckily, was general questions, interest in things, interest in business.<\/p><p class=\"transcript__paragraph\">And I didn't think much about the conversation, but I did. get the offer, I was surprised myself. And that's how I started as a software engineer in USD. Now, USD is a very interesting company because this organization was set up in 99 around the dot-com boom.<\/p><p class=\"transcript__paragraph\">But by that time it was set up in late part of 99. The boom was slowly becoming a bust. And what we realized was that we did some really cutting edge technology for many of the startups, very cool stuff.<\/p><p class=\"transcript__paragraph\">But by the time we invoiced the customers, many of the startups, the venture money had ran out and many of these startups just perished. And we were at that&hellip; pivotal moment where we had to really think about is this the right strategy for the company?<\/p><p class=\"transcript__paragraph\">And then the company kind of pivoted to move more into enterprises and look at how to help large enterprises do their IT related work. So that was an interesting moment. But it was an amazing learning at that point as a startup. It was really phenomenal.<\/p><p class=\"transcript__paragraph\">It's a bunch of young college grads coming together have no idea, but the founders had a great vision. I remember when I first talked to the leaders, they were talking about, we want to build one of the best IT companies in the world.<\/p><p class=\"transcript__paragraph\">And I'm sitting there thinking, you know what, we're just starting up. We're around a rendered conference room, a bunch of us with computers sitting around. I didn't think much about this company or about the job. I just wanted to get some experience and then move on.<\/p><p class=\"transcript__paragraph\">And it was interesting that the initial time in this company was more about getting to know each other, setting up the right culture, the founders talking about the mistakes that they have made, they're talking about why fundamentals are so important. And we were impatient.<\/p><p class=\"transcript__paragraph\">We were like, when is&hellip; When do we get to work on real projects? The first few weeks were like trying to do some of the internal projects for the company's internal operations and things like that.<\/p><p class=\"transcript__paragraph\">But then we started seeing things happening, customers coming through, office space, more people. Then we started seeing the growth. But foundationally, the value system, the culture, all of those were given a lot of emphasis. Manu Gopinath (<\/p><\/div><\/div><div class=\"transcript__item\" role=\"listitem\"><div class=\"transcript__item-meta\">\n                    <time>09:57<\/time> \n                    <button class=\"transcript__jump-button\" data-time=\"597\" aria-label=\"Jump to 09:57 in video\">\n                        <i class=\"icon-play\"><svg><use xlink:href=\"#icon-play\"><\/use><\/svg><\/i>\n                    <\/button>\n                <\/div><div class=\"transcript__content\" data-paragraphs=\"3\" data-readmore=\"Show more\" data-readless=\"Show less\"><p class=\"transcript__paragraph\">.267) Now, I look back 26 years later, I look back at it, I would say they were brilliant in the way that they set up the foundational elements very well before rushing into customers and products and projects and all of that.<\/p><p class=\"transcript__paragraph\">So we're very fortunate to be in an organization like that and be part of it and then get transformed as my career got transformed, the company got transformed, many thousands of engineers, their life and career got transformed through that organization. So proud to be part of the firm.<\/p><p class=\"transcript__paragraph\">mean, after 26 years, we had 30,000 plus in around 30 countries. So from a startup of 15 to 20 people, it's really grown over the years. So very proud of what it does. Yeah. I mean, there's so many things to unpick there and thank you again for sharing so openly, but I, you know, I love this idea of almost being the accidental technical person.<\/p><p class=\"transcript__paragraph\">know, you're very kind of open in saying, you know, you feel grateful and fortunate that you met the right group of people. Like, but it's interesting. I mean, what did they see in you? Right. And maybe it is that fact that you have the engineering background, you had an interest in business and you could adapt the technical skills, but you were more than just a technical person. Nobody has been in that.<\/p><p class=\"transcript__paragraph\">mean, some of them have worked for large corporations and we were putting together that experience. So that was a huge learning opportunity for someone like me. So whenever I had that opportunity, I would get things done.<\/p><p class=\"transcript__paragraph\">And without me realizing that it was all about, hey, I could get this done or I could figure this out and get it done. And can you help me do that? And I'm like, you know, I don't think I want to do HR as a carrier. He said, no, no, no, this is not a carrier.<\/p><p class=\"transcript__paragraph\">Just do it for some time because, you know, we were growing fast as a business. There's a lot of, you know, people related issues and challenges and, you know, policy making that is required. And he said, I just don't have the time.<\/p><p class=\"transcript__paragraph\">If you could help, that would be great. And he was an amazing salesperson. So he definitely sold the job to me. And I said, I'm not very interested in administration. that looks a little, you know, I'm not very keen on it.<\/p><p class=\"transcript__paragraph\">And he said, no, you don't have to worry about it. We'll get somebody to do that. How do you get the recall, hey, let's talk to UST. mean, they had some great things to offer to us. And so that's something I learned a lot. Now a friend of mine, who was listening to this conversation, he came to me and said, look, just don't say no to something like that. And that struck me because what I realized was that, if I'd said, yes, I can try, I would have been part of that team, would all be sent for the training on those technologies. everybody could do it, right?<\/p><p class=\"transcript__paragraph\">I mean, I could have done it too. So rather than just chickening out of something that I'm not sure of, I said, okay, let me get the courage to say, yes, I can do it. I can give it a try. I think that struck with me.<\/p><p class=\"transcript__paragraph\">And in this organization, so every time an opportunity popped up, I would say, I can give it a shot. And that's something that I learned, right? Just don't say, don't know, because I've never been exposed to it. And we don't know, it's very hard to predict sitting here today what will happen five years from now. Everything that we know of, I mean, this is again an inflection point. when it comes to technology.<\/p><p class=\"transcript__paragraph\">The first time ever where hardware, software, as well as labor is getting disrupted. We've seen in technology, hardware and software getting disrupted and improving, but the labor market and how we think of labor is being transformed.<\/p><p class=\"transcript__paragraph\">So it's very hard to predict what would happen, but the suggestion to youngsters is Whatever you're doing right now, leverage technology to help your job, but learn, be open, be good at what you do. I often hear this advice about do what you're passionate about.<\/p><p class=\"transcript__paragraph\">Personally, don't believe that's an option for a lot of people. I think you will find your passion. To me, that's the most brilliant masterpiece.
